Arm Wrestling
Inside Arm Wrestling
Arm Wrestling is a 1985 arcade game developed by Nintendo and released exclusively in North America. It is a spin-off of the Punch-Out!! series, sharing the same development team and many of its hallmark features, including a dual-monitor system. The game is an arcade sports/fighting title where players compete in arm wrestling matches against a cast of quirky computer-controlled opponents. It was planned to appear on the Nintendo Switch via the Arcade Archives series, but that port was ultimately cancelled, making the original arcade version the only official release.
The player steps up to the arm wrestling table and goes head-to-head with a series of eccentric characters, each with their own appearance and fighting style. Matches follow a best-of-three format. The core mechanic revolves around timing and rhythm: the player must rapidly press the action button to push the opponent's arm down, but also watch for the opponent's tells and react to counter their moves. Mashing the button without strategy can lead to fatigue, and the opponent may use dirty tricks or sudden bursts of strength. The game also uses a unique two-monitor setup, with one screen showing the player's perspective and the other displaying the opponent's reactions.
Arm Wrestling remains a fascinating piece of Nintendo's arcade history because it is one of the few titles to directly borrow the Punch-Out!! formula while applying it to a different sport. Its quirky cast of characters and the strategic button-timing gameplay give it a distinct personality. While not as deep or polished as its parent series, it offers a fun, challenging experience that captures the spirit of mid-80s arcade design. For collectors and retro enthusiasts, it is a rare gem that showcases Nintendo's willingness to experiment with hardware and gameplay ideas.
How to Play Arm Wrestling Online
To start playing, insert a coin (pressing the Select key if needed) and press Start. You will be taken to a character select screen where you can choose which opponent to face first. Each match consists of a best-of-three arm wrestling bout. The game's core loop is simple: press the action button rapidly to push the opponent's arm down while also keeping an eye on their facial expressions and body language. Sometimes the opponent will try to fake you out or switch up their timing, so you need to react quickly. If you mash without paying attention, your arm will tire and you will lose leverage. A new player should first focus on learning the rhythm of each opponent - watch for their eyes narrowing or a sudden smirk, which often signals a power move. Adjust your own timing to counter these moments. Once you win a match, you move on to the next character. The game ends when you lose three matches, not rounds, so pace yourself.
