Centipede

Centipede - Shooter Classic

Centipede (revision 3) is an arcade fixed shooter originally released by Atari, Inc. in 1981. Designed by Dona Bailey and Ed Logg, it became one of the most commercially successful titles from the golden age of arcade games. This specific build is a later revision of the original ROM, often found in emulation sets, though the core experience remains the same as the classic version. It's the same game that helped broaden the arcade audience, particularly among women and girls, thanks to its approachable design and vibrant color palette. The player controls a small insect-like character at the bottom of the screen, moving left and right while firing upward at a centipede that descends in a zigzag pattern. Each segment of the centipede must be shot, and when hit, it splits into a mushroom at that spot. Mushrooms appear across the playing field, blocking the path of the centipede and influencing its direction. Other enemies like spiders, fleas, and scorpions add variety, each with unique behaviors. The goal is to survive as long as possible while clearing all centipede segments and racking up points. What makes Centipede worth revisiting today is its straightforward yet addictive gameplay loop. The game demands quick reflexes and strategic shot placement, especially as mushrooms accumulate and the centipede's path becomes more chaotic. Compared to other shooters of the era, it stands out for its non-violent theme and pastel-colored graphics, which still look charming. If you enjoy classic arcade challenges that are easy to pick up but hard to master, Centipede (revision 3) delivers that experience faithfully.

How to play Centipede online

To play Centipede, first add a coin by pressing V (Select), then press Enter (Start) to begin. You control a small shooter at the bottom of the screen using the left and right Arrow Keys to move horizontally. Press X to fire upward at the centipede segments descending from the top. The goal is to shoot every segment of the centipede while avoiding collision with it, mushrooms, and other enemies like spiders and scorpions. The core loop is simple: shoot centipede segments to create mushrooms, which alter the centipede's path and force it to move downward in new patterns. If a centipede segment reaches the bottom of the screen, you lose a life. You have a limited number of lives, and the game ends when all are lost. New enemies spawn periodically, so stay alert and try to clear the field of mushrooms to keep the centipede's movement predictable. Practice managing multiple threats at once - that's the key to high scores.
