Burning Fight (NGM-018)(NGH-018)
Burning Fight (NGM-018)(NGH-018) on arcade
Burning Fight is a beat 'em up that SNK cooked up for their Neo Geo MVS hardware in 1991. The company wanted a piece of the side-scrolling brawler market that Technos had owned with Double Dragon, and this was their answer. It hit arcades first, then the Neo Geo AES home system, and eventually a Neo Geo CD port three years later. While not as famous as some of SNK's later fighters, it shows the studio's early attempts at the genre.
The player picks from three characters (a martial artist, a kickboxer, and a ninja) and walks from left to right punching and kicking waves of thugs. You fight through city streets, warehouses, and industrial areas, grabbing weapons like pipes and knives when they appear. Each stage ends with a stronger boss enemy, and the gameplay loop is straightforward: clear the screen, move forward, repeat. There's no deep combo system or complex mechanics here - just straightforward arcade brawling with a health bar and limited continues.
Today, Burning Fight is worth checking out if you're curious about SNK's early beat 'em ups or want to see how the Neo Geo handled the genre before games like Sengoku and Mutation Nation. It's not a hidden masterpiece, but it's a solid, basic brawler with decent sprite work and that classic SNK feel. If you've exhausted the more famous games in the genre, this one offers a quick, no-frills session that captures the early 90s arcade brawling experience.
How to Play Burning Fight (NGM-018)(NGH-018) Online
Getting Started
Insert a coin or press Start to begin. You'll see a character select screen where you pick from three fighters: the balanced martial arts guy, the slower but harder hitting kickboxer, or the fast ninja. Use the arrow keys to highlight and press S to confirm. The game uses the Neo Geo two-button layout: X for jump, S for attack. Hold S while moving to run, which also acts as a cancel for some moves. You can also press A (mapped to X) for a second attack button, but the main combat revolves around positioning and timing your punches.
The core loop is simple: walk to the right, fight every enemy that appears, and clear the screen before advancing. Enemies come in waves, and you'll face a named boss at the end of each stage. You can pick up dropped weapons by walking over them and press S to use them. Your health bar is shown at the top, and you have a limited number of lives and continues. If you die, you can continue by pressing Start before the timer runs out, but continues are finite. The action is cut from the same cloth as Final Fight or Streets of Rage, but with SNK's typical crisp sprites and a bit more deliberate pacing.
