Breakers is a 1996 fighting game developed and published by Visco Corporation for the Neo Geo platform. It arrived during the golden age of arcade fighters, going head-to-head with heavyweights like Street Fighter Alpha and King of Fighters. The Neo Geo hardware gave it crisp 2D sprites and that distinctive SNK-style presentation, though Visco was a smaller studio compared to Capcom or SNK. Two sequels followed later, including an HD update in 2024.
You pick a fighter from a modest roster and battle the computer or a friend in standard best-of-three rounds. The gameplay is classic 2D fighting: you move left and right, jump, block, and execute punches, kicks, and special moves using quarter-circle and charge motions. A unique mechanic is the ability to dash forward and backward quickly, plus a "break" move that can counter certain attacks. Each character has a super move that consumes part of your special gauge. The timing and spacing matter a lot, as the pace can be fast once you get used to the controls.
Breakers is worth checking out if you enjoy obscure Neo Geo fighters or want to see what Visco brought to the genre. It's not as polished as the top-tier SNK or Capcom titles, but it has its own charm with a varied cast and solid mechanics. The sequels are harder to find, so the original is a good starting point. Just don't expect the depth of Street Fighter or King of Fighters - it's a fun, straightforward arcade fighter from the mid-90s.
How to Play Breakers Online
Getting Started
First, insert a coin (press Enter) and then press Start to begin. You'll see a character select screen - pick one of the eight fighters using the D-Pad and confirm with the A button (X key). The game then throws you into a match against the computer opponent. You fight in rounds; win two out of three to advance to the next opponent. The goal is to defeat all opponents and see the ending.
The core loop is learning your character's normal attacks and special moves. Try the basic punch (B button) and kick (A button) in neutral, then experiment with quarter-circle forward + attack for fireballs or dragon punches. The dash (double-tap forward or backward) is crucial to closing distance or evading. When your super gauge is full, you can perform a desperation move with a specific input (usually two quarter-circles and an attack). Block low for low attacks, high for overheads, and watch for unblockable throws.
If you're new, pick the character with the highest speed or simplest moves - usually the first character on the roster. Practice the special moves in training mode if available (select Training from the menu after starting). The menus are in English for this version, so navigation is straightforward. Just keep playing to learn matchups and timings.
