Bosconian (new version)
Bosconian (new version) - Shooter Classic
Bosconian is a 1981 arcade multidirectional shooter from Namco, first appearing in Japanese arcades before Midway brought it to North America. This 'new version' is a later revision of the original ROM, likely tweaking some gameplay elements or bug fixes. It stands as an early example of free-roaming space combat, predating the more streamlined shooters that would dominate the decade.
You control a small spacecraft capable of moving in eight directions while firing both forward and backward simultaneously. The objective is to clear each stage by destroying all enemy missile bases while avoiding their projectiles and other threats. Bonus points are awarded for wiping out entire base clusters or collecting power-up items that appear after certain conditions are met. The game uses a simple but effective risk-reward loop: aggressive play nets more points but leaves you vulnerable.
Bosconian's twin-stick-like controls were innovative for 1981, requiring players to manage positioning and offensive output with equal care. It's less famous than Namco's other shooters like Galaga or Xevious, but its open-field design and emphasis on spatial awareness make it a rewarding experience for retro enthusiasts. This version preserves the original challenge without modern concessions, so expect steep difficulty and a genuine arcade feel.
How to Play Bosconian (new version) Online
Getting Started
Press Enter to insert a coin and start a game. You control a ship that moves in eight directions using the arrow keys. Use X to fire forward and S to fire backward - you'll need both constantly as enemies approach from all sides.
The core objective is to destroy all missile bases on each stage. These bases appear as fixed emplacements that launch projectiles at you. Avoid their shots and also watch for enemy fighters that drift across the screen. Destroying an entire base group often triggers a bonus item that clears the screen of enemies temporarily.
Your ship has a limited number of lives, and one hit means instant death. No continues are available in the original arcade format - you must restart from the first stage if you lose all lives. The game speeds up as you progress, demanding quicker reflexes and better route planning through enemy formations.
