Battle Bakraid (Japan) (Wed Apr 7 1999): arcade Shooter
Battle Bakraid is a vertical scrolling shoot 'em up arcade game that hit Japanese arcades in 1999. It was developed by Eighting, known for their work on other hardcore shooters. This title serves as the spiritual successor to Battle Garegga, which came out a few years earlier. If you were into arcade shmups at the time, you probably heard whispers of this one.
How to Play Battle Bakraid (Japan) (Wed Apr 7 1999) Online
Getting started: Before you jump in, know that this is the Japanese version so menus and text are in Japanese. The main screen lets you choose one of nine fighter jets - each has different shot patterns and speed. Pick whichever looks cool or try them all.
The core loop is classic: fly upward, dodge enemy bullets and obstacles, shoot everything that moves, and grab power-up items that fall from destroyed enemies. Your weapon can be upgraded by collecting P icons, and you get a special bomb attack by picking up B items. The game throws waves of enemies and mid-bosses at you, culminating in a screen-filling boss at the end of each stage. You have a limited stock of lives and continues, so memorizing patterns is key to survival.
If you're new to Eighting's shmups, expect a steep challenge. The difficulty ramps up quickly, but the hitboxes are fair. Don't be afraid to use bombs when cornered - they clear the screen and save you from a death. Practice makes progress.
