Baseball Stars Professional (NGM-002)
Inside Baseball Stars Professional (NGM-002)
Baseball Stars Professional hit arcades in 1990 as a launch title for SNK's Neo Geo MVS system. Developed and published by SNK, it's a follow-up to the NES original Baseball Stars but built from the ground up for the powerful Neo Geo hardware. This was the first baseball game on the platform, arriving alongside early Neo Geo titles to show off the system's arcade-perfect graphics and sound. If you remember the Neo Geo AES home console launch, this game was right there with it, giving players a taste of big-league baseball at home or in the arcade.
You pick a team and go head-to-head against the computer or another player across several different ballparks. The core loop is classic baseball: pitch from the mound, bat at the plate, and run the bases. The controls cover all the essentials - pitching styles, batting timing, and base running decisions. Each ballpark has its own dimensions and outfield walls, adding variety. The game uses a side-view perspective for fielding and batting, with player sprites big enough to show uniform details and team colors. It's straightforward arcade baseball without RPG or management layers, just pure game action.
Today Baseball Stars Professional holds up as a solid early Neo Geo sports title. It's not as deep as later baseball sims, but the arcade pace and bright pixel art make it easy to pick up for a quick game. For retro collectors, it's a key piece of Neo Geo history - one of the launch games that defined the system's library. If you enjoy 16-bit era baseball games or want to see what SNK could do with the sport before they moved on to fighters, this is worth a few innings.
How to Play Baseball Stars Professional (NGM-002) Online
To get started, press Start to move through the title screen and select your mode - either a single game against the CPU or a two-player versus match. You'll pick a team from the available eight, each with different strengths in hitting, pitching, and speed. Once the game begins, you control the pitcher: press the B button (S key) to select a pitch type and aim with the D-Pad, then press A (X key) to throw. On defense, fielding is mostly automatic with the CPU handling catches, but you can move the outfielder with the D-Pad if needed.
When your team is at bat, use the D-Pad to position the batter and press the A button (X key) to swing. Timing is key - swing too early or late and you'll miss or hit weakly. Base running is handled automatically unless you want to steal or advance on a hit; press the B button (S key) to send runners. The game moves fast, so expect quick innings with arcade-style results. Menus are in English, so no language barrier here. Just jump in and play ball.
