Ave Fenix (Recreativos Franco, Spanish bootleg of Phoenix)

Ave Fenix is a Spanish bootleg of the classic arcade shooter Phoenix, released by Recreativos Franco. It came out sometime in the early 1980s, likely after the original 1980 Phoenix by Amstar Electronics, and was distributed primarily in Spain on arcade hardware. As an unlicensed copy, it replicates the core setup of Phoenix but with altered graphics and sound to avoid legal issues.

You control a small ship that moves left and right at the bottom of the screen, facing waves of alien birds and flying saucers. The birds swoop down and drop eggs, which you must dodge or shoot. After clearing a formation, a mother ship appears and you need to hit its core while avoiding its smaller escorts. The game uses a standard joystick and a single fire button, with no continues or extra mechanics beyond the straightforward shoot-'em-up loop.

For retro collectors, Ave Fenix is a curiosity rather than a must-play. It plays nearly identically to Phoenix, so if you have access to the original, that version is more polished. But as a snapshot of the early Spanish arcade bootleg scene, it has historical charm. The difficulty ramps quickly, and the clipped visuals give it a rough-around-the-edges feel that bootleg fans often appreciate.
