Art of Fighting 2 / Ryuuko no Ken 2 (NGM-056)
What is Art of Fighting 2 / Ryuuko no Ken 2 (NGM-056)?
Art of Fighting 2, also known as Ryuuko no Ken 2, is a 1-on-1 fighting game released by SNK for the Neo Geo arcade hardware in 1994. It's the direct sequel to the original Art of Fighting and runs on the same NGM-056 board. The game was first released in Japan and later made its way to North American arcades. SNK handled both development and publishing duties, continuing the series' focus on large character sprites and detailed animation. This isn't a hack or a prototype - it's the official second installment in the franchise.
The core gameplay involves selecting one of several fighters - including returning characters like Ryo Sakazaki and Robert Garcia alongside newcomers like Eiji Kisaragi - and battling opponents in a best-of-three-round format. Each fighter has a unique set of punches, kicks, and special moves. A notable mechanic is the Rage Gauge, which fills as you sustain damage, temporarily boosting your attack power and unlocking a powerful Desperation Move unique to each character. You can also dash, sidestep, and throw your opponent. The single-player campaign strings these fights together with brief story intermissions and a final boss encounter.
Art of Fighting 2 stands out for its oversized, carefully animated sprites - characters take up a good chunk of the screen, giving each blow more visual weight. The Rage Gauge system adds a nice risk-reward layer, encouraging aggressive play even when you're losing. It's a solid, if sometimes stiff, fighter that sits just before SNK shifted focus to the King of Fighters series. While it might not have the depth of its successor, it's worth playing for fans of 90s arcade fighters who want to see where SNK's house style was heading.
How to Play Art of Fighting 2 / Ryuuko no Ken 2 (NGM-056) Online
Getting Started
When you boot up Art of Fighting 2 for Neo Geo, you'll first see a title screen. Press Start to proceed. If the ROM is the Japanese version, menus and character names will be in Japanese. You can navigate with the D-Pad and use the A button (X on keyboard) to confirm selections. The main menu offers options for a single-player story mode, versus mode (VS), and options. Choose the first option to jump into the arcade mode.
Once you're in character select, pick a fighter. The game will then show a short story introduction. Each match is a best-of-three round fight. Your goal is to deplete the opponent's health bar before they do the same to you. Pay attention to the Rage Gauge below your health - it increases as you take hits. When it's full, your character glows and you can perform a Desperation Move by doing a specific motion and pressing both punch buttons. Special moves are executed with traditional quarter-circle or charge motions. Practice a few basics like crouching punches and throws to get a feel for the game's timing.
After each victory, you advance to the next opponent. The difficulty increases, and eventually you'll face the final boss, Mr. Big. If you lose all your health, you can continue by pressing Start (needs coins in arcade mode; in emulation the continue prompt appears). The game ends after the credits roll. Try experimenting with different characters - each has a distinct move set and Rage special.
