Arkanoid - Revenge of DOH (World)

Arkanoid - Revenge of DOH is the 1987 arcade sequel to the original Arkanoid, developed and published by Taito. It was released worldwide in arcades, riding the wave of the breakout-style craze that defined the mid-80s. This iteration refines the gameplay with a darker color palette and added challenge, pitting players against the villainous DOH once more. The cabinet featured Taito's standard joystick-and-button layout, making it accessible to anyone who dropped a quarter into the slot.

You control a paddle called the Vaus at the bottom of the screen, bouncing a ball upward to smash a grid of bricks. Each level introduces new brick colors and layouts, and power-ups fall from destroyed bricks - they can widen the paddle, grant multi-ball, or even turn the ball into a laser. The core loop is simple: keep the ball in play, clear the stage, and survive the boss encounter at the end, where DOH itself appears as a glowing enemy. Lose all your lives and it's game over, no continues unless the arcade operator enabled them.

This is a rock-solid example of the paddle-and-ball genre, often imitated but rarely surpassed. Its tight collision detection and escalating speed make every session a test of reflexes. While it doesn't reinvent the wheel, the Revenge of DOH adds enough new brick patterns and a menacing final boss to feel like a proper evolution.
