Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 - Fighting Classic

Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 hit the SEGA Genesis in 1996, bringing arcade-quality blood and speed to home consoles. It's the final and most refined version of the Mortal Kombat trilogy for 16-bit systems, polishing the already solid Mortal Kombat 3 with faster gameplay, extra characters, and hidden secrets. Midway's arcade original was already legendary, and this Genesis port from Acclaim crammed in impressive sprite work and savage finishing moves despite the hardware limits. You pick a fighter and enter a tournament where survival is everything. The core loop is straightforward: win two out of three rounds by depleting your opponent's health bar using punches, kicks, special moves, and combos. If you dominate, you're rewarded with a chance to perform a Fatality, Babality, or Friendship - each triggered by specific inputs at a precise distance. The Genesis version kept the run button for dashing in and out, plus the ability to summon a hidden Kombat Kode to unlock cheats and characters. For fighting game fans on the Genesis, this is as good as it got. It's faster and more tactical than Mortal Kombat II, and the roster includes fan favorites like Scorpion, Sub-Zero, and Noob Saibot. The arcade-perfect controls and combo system make it a blast for local multiplayer, but the single-player mode can feel brutal thanks to cheap AI. If you want a no-frills, high-skill fighter that respects its arcade roots, UMK3 on Genesis still delivers.

How to play Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 online

Select your fighter and dive into the tournament. The D-Pad moves your character, B button punches and executes special moves when combined with directional inputs, and A button kicks. Holding run (B button while pressing forward) lets you dash, which is key for closing distance or escaping combos. The X button (Y on original pad) is used for low punch and for certain Kombat Kode entries, while Z (shoulder) handles block. To perform a Fatality, stand at the right distance after the "Finish Him!" prompt and input the correct sequence shown in the pause menu or from fighters' moves lists. Start the game by choosing either single-player arcade mode or versus mode. In single-player, you'll face a sequence of opponents with increasing difficulty, culminating in a boss fight against Motaro and then Shao Kahn. Between matches, you can enter Kombat Kodes on the character select screen by pressing A, B, and Start in specific patterns - these can unlock hidden fighters like Noob Saibot or change match speed and damage. The core loop is learning each character's specials, practicing combos, and mastering the timing to land your finishers.
