How to play Mortal Kombat online
When you start Mortal Kombat, you are greeted by the iconic title screen. Press Enter to advance, then choose your difficulty level (Very Easy, Easy, Medium, Hard, Very Hard) using the D-Pad and confirm with X. After that, you enter the character select screen where you pick your fighter from a row of nine silhouettes (including Reptile as a secret). Move the D-Pad left or right to highlight a portrait and press X to lock it in.
The core gameplay is a best-of-three match against either another player or the AI. Your goal is to deplete the opponent's health bar using a mix of basic punches, kicks, and special moves. Each character has signature techniques: for example, down-forward + high punch throws a fireball for Scorpion. You can also sidestep (up or down on D-Pad) to dodge projectiles. After winning a round, you can enter a fatality code to finish the opponent in a gruesome way, but codes vary per character and stage.
For new players, focus on learning one character's moves first - Scorpion is a good starter because his spear (back, back, low punch) is easy to execute. Block by holding back, and use the run button (S) to close distance quickly. The AI can be punishing on higher difficulties, so start on Easy and work your way up. If you're playing against a friend, the versus mode is selected from the main menu before the match begins.
