Golden Axe III (Japan)
Golden Axe III (Japan) - Beat em Up Classic
Golden Axe III is a side-scrolling beat 'em up that Sega developed and published for the Genesis in 1993. It originally came out only in Japan, though North American players could eventually try it through the Sega Channel service in 1995. This sequel continues the arcade-style brawling that made the series popular, with four selectable warriors and familiar fantasy trappings.
You choose one of four characters and fight through level after level using punches, kicks, and a variety of weapons. The story pits you against the evil Damud Hellstrike, who has stolen the Golden Axe and kidnapped Princess Yuria. Along the way you can mount creature-like Bizarrians for stronger attacks, collect magic potions to unleash powerful spells, and smash barrels for items. The core loop is straightforward: move right, clear screens of enemies, and survive boss fights.
Today Golden Axe III occupies a niche spot in the Genesis library because of its limited original release. It plays very similarly to the first two games but refines the combat slightly and adds a few new abilities. If you like old-school brawlers, it is a fun, no-nonsense example of the genre. It is not revolutionary, but it is a solid pick for a quick arcade-style session.
How to Play Golden Axe III (Japan) Online
First, press Enter to start the game. The menus are in Japanese, but the character select screen shows four warriors. Use the D-pad to highlight your choice and press X to confirm. You can also start a two‑player game by having the second player press Start at the title screen.
Once you begin, move right through the level using the Arrow Keys. Attack with S, jump with X, and combine jumps with attacks for aerial moves. Collect magic potions from fallen enemies or smashed objects - each potion fills one slot of your magic meter. Press the attack button while holding enough magic to cast a screen‑clearing spell. Riding a Bizarrian is done by walking into one; on a mount you get more powerful attacks but lose it after a few hits.
Dying costs a life and you can continue by entering a password shown at the game over screen. The password is case‑sensitive, so write it down carefully. The game is short but tough, with limited continues per session unless you note the passwords. Playing with a friend makes the journey easier and more fun.
