Sylphia
Sylphia Overview
Sylphia is a 1993 vertically scrolling shooter for the NEC PC Engine Super CD-ROM², developed by Compile and published by Tonkin House exclusively in Japan. While most shooters of the era leaned on sci-fi themes, this one draws from heroic fantasy and ancient Greek mythology. You control Silphia, a fallen warrior reincarnated as a demigoddess by Zeus, who must battle the forces of Hades after the underworld god is possessed by ancient evils. The CD format allows for animated cutscenes and a soundtrack that complements the mythological setting. It's a niche title even among PC Engine fans, but its unique aesthetic makes it memorable.
How to Play Sylphia Online
Pop the game into your emulator and press Start to move past the title screen. Sylphia is entirely in Japanese, but the menus are straightforward: you'll see options for starting a new game, continuing (if you have a save), and maybe a config screen. Select the first option to begin. The game opens with a brief story sequence introducing Silphia's quest.
Gameplay is classic vertical shmup action. Your ship, which is actually Silphia flying on her own, moves around the screen as enemies pour in from above. Hold the attack button to fire continuously. You can also collect power-ups that increase your shot's spread and damage. Watch for large glowing orbs that grant temporary invincibility or stronger attacks. Between stages, you see short animated story clips. The core loop is shoot everything, dodge bullets, grab upgrades, and defeat the end-of-level boss. Managing your position and knowing when to use special attacks is key to survival.
