Magical Fantasy Adventure - Popful Mail

When you start the game, you'll see a title screen and then a menu in Japanese. The top option is usually "New Game" and the bottom is "Continue". Select New Game to begin. You control Mail through side-scrolling levels, hacking at enemies with your sword and using magic attacks that consume MP. The core loop is a mix of platforming and combat: move through each stage, defeat enemies to earn experience and gold, and find hidden items. Between stages you can visit shops to buy equipment and items using gold. Leveling up increases your stats and unlocks new spells. The game is linear but encourages exploration for secrets. Since the menus are in Japanese, you'll need to memorize the basic shopping and equip screen layouts, but the gameplay is straightforward enough that you can figure it out through trial and error.
