Advanced Variable Geo

Starting Advanced Variable Geo on the NEC PC Engine CD feels like stepping into a fast-paced fighting game with a distinct 90s anime flair. The initial moments introduce a handful of colorful, stylized female fighters, each with their own moves and special attacks. The pacing is brisk, with matches that emphasize quick reflexes and strategic use of combos, typical of the era's fighting genre. The game's audio and visual presentation combine digitized voices and anime-inspired character art, creating an engaging hook for fans of arcade-style fighters. Advanced Variable Geo was released exclusively in Japan in 1995 for the NEC PC Engine CD platform. It is part of the Variable Geo series, known for its all-female roster of combatants. The game was published by TGL, a company involved with several PC Engine titles during that period. Its CD format allowed for enhanced audio and animated sequences compared to cartridge-based fighting games on the same console. The title supports one or two players, offering both solo and versus modes typical of fighting games at the time. Within the fighting game genre, Advanced Variable Geo holds a niche appeal due to its character design and use of the PC Engine CD's capabilities. While it may not have achieved the widespread recognition of contemporaries on more prominent consoles, it remains a noteworthy example of mid-90s Japanese fighting games with anime aesthetics. The gameplay mechanics, while straightforward, still provide a challenge for enthusiasts of vintage fighters. Its retention of classic genre elements ensures it holds nostalgic value for collectors and fans of the PC Engine library.
