Lemmings
Getting to Know Lemmings
Your goal in each level is to lead the lemmings from their entrance to a designated exit without losing too many. You control a cursor that assigns specific abilities to individual lemmings: building bridges, digging tunnels, blocking paths, or exploding barriers. The catch is that the lemmings march forward blindly, and you must prioritize and time your actions to save them from cliffs, water, traps, and other hazards. Mistakes are permanent, and the limited number of lemmings per level forces you to think carefully about each move.
This port remains a solid way to enjoy the game today, especially if you appreciate the PC Engine CD's audio capabilities. The core puzzles are unchanged from the original, offering the same satisfying difficulty curve that made Lemmings a household name in the early 90s. It's a straightforward conversion, not a remake, but for puzzle fans who want to play it on a console with a controller, this is a faithful and enjoyable version. Just be prepared for the occasional slowdown in crowded scenes.
How to Play Lemmings Online
Getting Started
When you start Lemmings, you'll see a level overview with a timer, a count of lemmings needed to save, and the total available. Pick a level from the menu (the PC Engine CD version has Japanese menus, but the icons and numbers are intuitive). Your first task is to observe the terrain and identify the path from entrance to exit. The lemmings will begin marching automatically, so you must act fast.
To assign a skill, highlight a lemming with the cursor (move with D-Pad, confirm with X) and then select a skill from the icon bar at the bottom using the D-Pad or shoulder buttons. Common skills include: Block (stops lemmings by building a wall), Build (creates a staircase), Dig (digs through soft ground), Explode (clears obstacles but kills the lemming), and Float (gives an umbrella for safe falls). Practice on early tutorial levels to get a feel for timing and resource management.
Remember that each level has a limited number of each skill type. You can pause the action with Start or Select to plan ahead. If too many lemmings die, you'll need to restart. The key is to use skills sparingly and anticipate the lemmings' relentless march. The PC Engine port runs at a solid pace, so keep the D-Pad responsive and experiment with different strategies.
