Spider-Man (USA, Europe)
About Spider-Man (USA, Europe)
Spider-Man for the Game Boy Color is an official side-scrolling action platformer released in 2000 in North America and Europe. Published by Activision, it adapts the web-slinger's comic-book adventures into a handheld format. Despite the limited hardware, the game tries to capture the essence of swinging through New York and fighting classic villains, though it plays more like a straightforward platformer than the free-roaming PS1 game.
The player controls Spider-Man across several levels, each ending with a boss fight against enemies like Venom, Scorpion, or the Green Goblin. Gameplay focuses on jumping, climbing walls, and using web attacks and punches to take down foes. You'll also rescue civilians and collect power-ups scattered through the stages. The controls are responsive enough, but the small screen can make timing tricky.
This title is worth a look if you enjoy retro handheld platformers and want a decent licensed game from the Game Boy Color library. It's not a masterpiece, but it's a solid, portable Spider-Man experience that handled the character well for its time. Compared to other superhero games on the system, it holds up reasonably well, especially if you're nostalgic for that era of cartridge gaming.
How to Play Spider-Man (USA, Europe) Online
Getting Started
When you start the game, you'll see a title screen and a brief intro if any. Press Enter to proceed. In the main menu, you can usually select 'New Game' or 'Continue' using the D-Pad and confirm with X. The game will drop you into the first level, where you control Spider-Man from a side-scrolling perspective.
Your core loop is moving through each stage, defeating enemies with B attacks and A jumps, collecting web icons to restore your web meter, and rescuing civilians or grabbing health items. Each level ends with a boss fight, where you need to learn attack patterns and dodge. The D-Pad moves left/right, and you can climb certain walls by pressing against them.
Important: Some later enemies require precise timing. Keep an eye on your health and web supply. Use X to jump over pits and obstacles. If you get stuck, remember that you can swing on webs from some ceilings, but this is limited to specific spots marked by web points. There is no save system on the cartridge, so you'll need to beat it in one sitting or use emulator save states.
