Medarot 2 - Kuwagata Version is a Game Boy Color RPG that hit shelves in Japan back in 2000. It's part of the Medarot series, which blends monster collecting with turn-based robot battles. The game was developed by Natsume and published by Imagineer, the same team behind the original Medarot for Game Boy. This Kuwagata version is one of two parallel releases, the other being Kabuto Version, each featuring different Medarot units you can obtain. You play as a young boy who collects Medaparts - heads, arms, and legs for customizable robots called Medarots. The core loop involves exploring various areas, talking to NPCs, and engaging in AI-controlled battles against other Medarots. Before a fight, you equip your robot with parts that determine its abilities, attack patterns, and special moves. The battle system is strategic but straightforward: you issue commands from a menu, and the robots act on their own based on their AI settings. Winning earns you experience points and sometimes new parts to swap out. Medarot 2 stands out as a solid entry in the creature-collection RPG wave that followed Pokémon. Its focus on mechanical customization rather than evolutionary lines gives it a different flavor. The pixel art and sound are typical of late Game Boy Color titles - colorful and detailed for its time. Since it never left Japan, it's a niche pick for retro collectors who enjoy monster-battling games with a twist. If you can navigate the Japanese menus, it offers a satisfying, though repetitive, loop of upgrading your robot army.

How to play Medarot 2 - Kuwagata Version online

When you boot up Medarot 2 - Kuwagata Version, the first thing you'll see is a title screen in Japanese. Press Enter to start, then select a save file using the D-Pad and confirm with X (A button). If this is your first time, the game will begin with an intro sequence and a brief tutorial - even if you don't read Japanese, you can follow along by talking to everyone and checking your inventory. Your goal is to collect Medaparts by winning battles and exploring towns. The core gameplay loop is straightforward: walk around using the D-Pad, talk to people by pressing X in front of them, and open the menu with Start. From the menu you can equip your Medarot, check your parts, save the game, or look at battle records. Battles happen when you walk into a wild Medarot or challenge another trainer. During battle you select commands from a menu using the D-Pad and confirm with X. The A and B buttons (mapped to X and S on keyboard) are used for confirm and cancel - pay attention to which is which. Because the entire game is in Japanese, you'll want to have a guide or use a translation app if you're not fluent. The menus are icon-based enough that you can navigate by trial and error, but understanding the part names and stats will require some help. Save often using the Start menu's save option (usually the second icon from the top). The game uses a battery save, so you can make progress over multiple sessions.

Medarot 2 - Kuwagata Version FAQ

Is there anything iconic or memorable about Medarot 2 - Kuwagata Version?

Medarot 2 is remembered for its deep customization system where you mix and match robot parts rather than level up a single creature. The Kuwagata version specifically includes a stag beetle-themed Medarot that becomes a signature unit, mirroring the rival Kabuto Version's rhinoceros beetle. Its connection to the larger Medarot media franchise also gives it a loyal fan base.

Is Medarot 2 - Kuwagata Version exclusive to Game Boy Color or did it appear on other systems?

This version was released only for the Game Boy Color in Japan. No ports or re-releases for other platforms have been documented. The Medarot series did see later entries on Nintendo DS and other handhelds, but this specific title remained exclusive to Nintendo's handheld.

Can players save progress in Medarot 2 - Kuwagata Version?

Yes, the game uses a battery-backed save system that allows you to save your progress at any time from the main menu. You can have multiple save files, which is useful if you want to start over with different Medarot choices. As with many Game Boy Color cartridges, the battery may have died in original copies, but emulators handle saves without issue.
