Wild Snake was a puzzle game in development for the SEGA Genesis back in 1994, but it never made it to store shelves. The prototype we have here was designed by Alexey Lysogorov and presented by Alexey Pajitnov - yes, the same Pajitnov who created Tetris. It was also planned for the Game Gear, but neither version saw an official release. This is an unfinished build, a snapshot of what could have been.
The core idea is simple: snakes of different colors and lengths drop from the top of the screen and wiggle their way down. Your goal is to clear them by matching two snakes of the same color - when they touch, they disappear. There is no rotation or complex block stacking like in Tetris; instead, you move and position the falling snakes to line up with others of the same hue. It's a straightforward, color-matching puzzle mechanic that relies on quick thinking and spatial awareness.
For puzzle fans, this prototype offers a rare look at an unreleased game from a legendary designer. It feels like a distant cousin of Tetris, but with its own twist. Since it never got finished, the controls and pacing might feel a bit rough around the edges, but that's part of the charm for collectors and historians. Getting Started
When you boot the prototype, you'll likely see a title screen. Press Enter to start. The game drops a snake from the top - use the left and right arrow keys to steer it as it falls. Your aim is to land the snake so that its head touches a snake of the same color already sitting on the playfield. Matching colors clears both snakes and scores points.
The core loop is constant: a new snake appears, you move it into position, and try to keep the pile from reaching the top. Since this is an early prototype, the interface may be barebones, and there might be limited or no options. Just keep matching colors to survive. If the screen fills up, it's game over.
Because the game was never finished, some controls might not do anything. Stick to the D-Pad and the A button (X key). If you accidentally trigger something, press Enter to restart. The gameplay is straightforward - no hidden mechanics, just pure color-matching action.
