Vapor Trail is an arcade vertical scrolling shooter that Data East originally developed for the arcades, then ported to the Sega Genesis in 1991. The USA release brought the fast-paced aerial combat to home consoles, giving Genesis owners a slice of Data East's arcade action. It's a straight-up shoot-'em-up through and through, no frills, just classic arcade design tailored for the 16-bit era. You pilot a fighter jet through multiple stages, moving up and down the screen while enemy planes, tanks, and turrets swarm in from all directions. The core loop is simple: dodge bullets, blast everything that moves, and grab power-ups that drop from destroyed enemies to upgrade your weapon. Each stage ends with a boss encounter that tests your reflexes and pattern recognition. The game keeps the pressure high with constant enemy waves and a limited number of lives. Vapor Trail doesn't rewrite the shooter rulebook, but it holds up as a solid arcade port for fans of the genre. It's one of those titles that fits naturally into the Genesis library alongside other vertical shooters like Truxton or Fire Shark. If you enjoy straightforward, no-nonsense shooting that demands quick reactions, it's worth a look. Just don't expect deep mechanics or a complex story - it's all about the action.

How to play Vapor Trail online

Getting started: Fire up the game and press Enter (Start) to begin. You control a fighter jet that moves in eight directions using the Arrow Keys. Press X (A button) to fire your main weapon at the waves of enemies coming from the top of the screen. Your only real goal is to survive each stage by shooting down everything and avoiding collisions and enemy fire. The core loop moves through several side-scrolling levels - each one throws a tighter formation of enemies and more aggressive bullet patterns at you. Keep an eye out for power-up icons that drop from certain enemies; these enhance your gun or give you temporary shields. Don't get too comfortable - bosses appear at the end of each stage and require you to memorize their attack patterns. If you die, you restart at a checkpoint, but losing all your lives means game over, so practice makes progress. One thing to note: Vapor Trail is an arcade-style shooter, meaning it doesn't hold your hand. There's no continue system on the Genesis version, so you have to finish the game in one credit. Plan your movement, learn which enemies to prioritize, and use your power-ups wisely. It's tough but fair, and that's part of its charm.
