Tommy Lasorda Baseball

Released for the SEGA Genesis in the early 1990s, Tommy Lasorda Baseball was the first 16-bit era sports title to hit the console. It landed in North America and featured the endorsement of the legendary Los Angeles Dodgers manager, putting his name on the box to sell the simulation to baseball fans. As an early contender in what became the 16-bit sports gaming wars, this was one of the first attempts to bring official MLB teams to a home console with a full roster of 28 ballclubs. You pick one of the then-28 MLB teams and play through games with 25-man rosters that mimic the real-life lineups of the era. The core loop is straightforward: pitch, bat, field, and run the bases just like a standard baseball simulation. Password support lets you track a season's progress, meaning you can save your standings and come back later without needing a cartridge battery. The gameplay is basic by modern standards but was a solid representation of the sport for its time. Tommy Lasorda Baseball occupies an interesting spot in Genesis history as the first 16-bit baseball game, predating later heavy hitters like Sports Talk Baseball and World Series Baseball. It's worth checking out if you want to see where console baseball started in the 16-bit generation, but don't expect deep mechanics or flashy presentation. It's a simple, no-frills title that shows its age, yet it remains a neat piece of sports gaming history for collectors and fans of the early Genesis library.
