TNN Outdoors Bass Tournament '96 - Simulation Classic

TNN Outdoors Bass Tournament '96 is a fishing simulation that came out exclusively for the Sega Genesis around the mid-90s. It's the sequel to TNN Bass Tournament of Champions, which also appeared on the SNES and Genesis. This version, however, was only released on Sega's 16-bit console, making it a bit of a rarity in the fishing game library of that era. The TNN (The Nashville Network) branding ties it to a real outdoors TV channel, giving it a slight simulation feel. The player takes on the role of a bass angler competing in a series of tournaments. The core loop involves selecting a lure, casting your line into the water, and reeling in fish while managing tension to avoid breaking the line. You'll need to choose the right bait for the conditions and aim for the best spots to hook the biggest bass. The game presents a top-down view of the lake and a side-view during the fight, similar to other Genesis fishing titles. For retro fishing fans, this is a niche but interesting entry in the Genesis library. It's not a groundbreaking title, but it does offer a competent fishing experience with the TNN brand recognition. If you enjoy classic fishing games like Bass Masters or the earlier TNN Bass Tournament of Champions, this sequel is worth checking out for its exclusive Genesis content. Just don't expect a deep simulation - it's a straightforward arcade-style fishing game that captures the basics well enough.

When you boot up TNN Outdoors Bass Tournament '96, you'll land on a title screen. Press Start to enter the main menu, where you can choose a tournament or a practice mode. Use the D-Pad to navigate and the A button (X on keyboard) to confirm your selection. If you're new, start with practice to get a feel for casting and reeling.

Once in a tournament, you'll see a lake map. Use the D-Pad to move your boat to a fishing spot. Press the B button (S) to bring up your tackle box, choose a lure, and then cast by pressing the A button (X). The line will fly out; adjust the power with the D-Pad. When a fish bites, set the hook with a quick press, then reel in by pressing the A button repeatedly while keeping the line tension bar within the safe zone. If the bar goes too high, the line might snap

Your goal is to catch the heaviest total weight of bass within the time limit. Pay attention to water depth and structures like logs or lily pads for better catches. The game ends after several tournaments, and you'll get a score based on your haul. There's no deep story, just pure fishing action.
