Time Trax

Inside Time Trax

Time Trax is an action-platformer based on the short-lived 1993 TV series of the same name. Originally developed by Malibu Interactive and published by Malibu Games for the Super Nintendo in 1994, this is a prototype build for the Sega Genesis that never saw an official release on that platform. If you're a fan of obscure licensed games or pre-release oddities, this is a rare glimpse at what could have been on Sega's 16-bit hardware. The player controls police Captain Lambert as he chases fugitives through time. Your main tool is a stunner that sends criminals back to the future, but you also have martial arts moves for close-quarters combat. The levels span different historical eras, and each one ends with your supercomputer companion Selma giving you updates. It's a straightforward side-scrolling action game with light platforming elements, much like other TV-to-game adaptations of the era. As a prototype, this build is interesting more for its historical curiosity than for polished gameplay. The graphics and sound are clearly rough, and the level design may feel incomplete compared to the finished SNES version. Still, it's worth a look if you enjoy hunting down unreleased Genesis titles or want to see how Time Trax might have played on Sega's system. Just don't expect a hidden gem - treat it as an artifact.

Getting Started

When you start the prototype, you'll see a title screen (assuming it loads properly). Press Enter to start the game. You control Lambert using the D-Pad to move left and right, and press X to jump over obstacles or gaps. The B button uses your stunner, which is your primary weapon - aim at enemies and fire to send them back to the future. If an enemy gets too close, you can press the B button while close to perform a martial arts strike instead.

The core loop is simple: move right through each level, defeat or avoid enemies, and reach the end. You have a health bar, and collecting items may restore some health. The prototype may not have a proper level select or save feature, so expect to start from the beginning each time you play. Some levels might be incomplete or have glitchy elements, which is normal for a pre-release build.

Because this is a prototype, menus and on-screen text are in English and easy to follow. There are no complex mechanics to learn - just run, jump, and stun your way through history. If you get stuck, try experimenting with the stunner versus melee attacks, as some enemies may require different tactics. Keep in mind that the game might crash or behave oddly, so save your progress using your browser's save state feature if you want to explore further.
