Super Mario in Sonic the Hedgehog 1
Inside Super Mario in Sonic the Hedgehog 1
Super Mario in Sonic the Hedgehog 1 is a ROM hack for the SEGA Genesis that mashes up two of the biggest mascots of the 16-bit era. It's not an official release - this is a fan-made modification that replaces Sonic's character model and some sprites with Mario from the Super Mario series. The exact creator and release date aren't widely documented, but it's been floating around online ROM sites for years. If you remember the endless debates about Mario vs. Sonic back in the day, this hack feels like a cheeky answer to that rivalry, dropping Mario into Sonic's side-scrolling world.
How to Play Super Mario in Sonic the Hedgehog 1 Online
Getting Started
When you boot up the hack, you'll see the familiar Sonic 1 title screen - no changes there. Press Start (Enter) to begin. Mario appears at the start of Green Hill Zone, but he moves exactly like Sonic: he can roll into a spin, jump on enemies, and collect rings. The core loop is the same as the original Sonic the Hedgehog: race through three acts per zone, defeat Dr. Robotnik at the end of each, and try to reach the Special Stages by collecting 50 rings and jumping into a giant ring at the end of Act 1.
The hack mainly swaps the player sprite and some sound effects, so all the original level layouts, enemy patterns, and obstacles remain intact. If you've played Sonic 1 before, you know what to do. The only twist is seeing Mario's stubby legs run through loops and bounce off Buzz Bombers. Keep an eye on rings for health and watch out for spikes - just like in Sonic, a hit without rings means death. There's no save feature, so you'll need to finish in one sitting.
