Sunset Riders (USA)
Sunset Riders (USA) on Genesis
Sunset Riders is a run and gun game that originated in arcades back in 1991, developed and published by Konami. The North American release for the SEGA Genesis arrived that same year, bringing the arcade experience to home consoles. This is a port of the coin-op original, not a hack or homebrew, so it retains the fast-paced side-scrolling action that made the arcade version a hit.
How to Play Sunset Riders (USA) Online
Getting Started
When you hit Start, you are thrown into a character select screen. You can pick one of four bounty hunters; each controls identically but the sprites look different. The game is a straightforward side-scrolling shooter. You walk from left to right, facing waves of outlaws, bandits, and Native American warriors. Your main weapon is a six-shooter, but you can pick up shotguns and rifles from fallen enemies or by shooting crates.
The core loop is simple: shoot everything hostile, avoid their bullets, and keep moving. Each stage ends with a boss fight against a named criminal with a wanted poster. If you get hit, you lose a life; once all lives are gone, it is game over unless you continue. The Genesis port lacks any password or save feature, so completion requires one solid run.
A few things to watch for: horses appear as power-ups - grabbing one gives you a temporary speed boost and lets you shoot from horseback, which clears enemies faster. Also, look out for signs pointing in different directions; some stages have branching paths that affect which boss you face. The game is not overly complex, but reaction time matters.
