Streets of Rage 2 (USA)
Streets of Rage 2 (USA) on Genesis
Streets of Rage 2 landed on the SEGA Genesis in 1993, published by Sega themselves. It's a side-scrolling beat 'em up, the sequel to 1991's Streets of Rage, and widely considered one of the best in the genre on 16-bit consoles. You take control of one of four vigilantes - Axel, Blaze, Skate, or Max - each with their own fighting style, as you fight through city streets to take down the returning Mr. X and his criminal syndicate.
The core loop is straightforward: move from left to right across each stage, beating up waves of punks, thugs, and boss characters. Each character has a basic punch and kick, a jump attack, and a special move that costs health to use. You can pick up weapons like pipes and knives, and even use environmental hazards like exploding barrels. The game has eight stages, each ending with a boss fight, and continues until you run out of lives. A two-player co-op mode lets a friend join in, which is where the game really shines.
What makes Streets of Rage 2 worth playing today is how tight and satisfying it feels. The animations are smooth, the enemy variety keeps things interesting, and the soundtrack by Yuzo Koshiro is legendary - it blends house, techno, and funk in a way that still sounds fresh. It's a masterclass in the beat 'em up genre, and while the story is thin, the gameplay is addictive. If you have a friend to play with, it's even better. It's a must-try for any retro action fan.
How to Play Streets of Rage 2 (USA) Online
When you boot up Streets of Rage 2, you first see a title screen. Press Start to proceed. You'll then choose between four characters on a selection screen - each has slightly different speed, reach, and power. Highlight your pick and press the A button (X key) to confirm. If you're playing with a friend, Player 2 can press Start on their controller to join; then both choose characters.
The game plays in a standard side-scrolling beat 'em up fashion. Move right, fight enemies that appear from both sides, and clear each area to advance. You have a health bar, and some stages hide food and other healing items inside trash cans or on the ground. Your special move (press A and S together, or use a dedicated button in some mappings) costs a bit of health but can clear enemies around you. Use it wisely. At the end of each stage, a boss with a bigger health bar and unique attacks awaits. Defeat it to proceed.
There's no save feature, so you'll need to play through in one sitting or use the built-in continue system when you run out of lives. The game gives you a limited number of credits. If you lose all your lives, you can continue from the start of the current stage. Co-op adds a lot of fun, but be careful - friendly fire is possible with some attacks. The key is learning enemy patterns and managing your positioning.
