When you load the game, you'll see the familiar Sonic 1 title screen but with Knuckles appearing on the logo area. Press Start (Enter) to begin. You'll be dropped into Green Hill Zone Act 1 as Knuckles. The main goal is to reach the giant ring at the end of each act. Collect rings to protect yourself from enemies, and try to grab the chaos emeralds by finding hidden giant rings in the acts - the mechanics for special stages are unchanged from the original.
The key difference is mastering Knuckles' abilities. To glide, jump and then press down (hold) while in the air; you'll glide forward and can steer slightly left or right. While gliding, you can also grab onto walls - if you glide into a wall, you'll cling to it and can climb by pressing up or down. This opens up shortcuts and hidden areas that were impossible for Sonic. Remember that Knuckles can't spin dash like Sonic or Tails, so you'll need to rely on his unique moves for speed and traversal.
