Sonic the Hedgehog (Prototype)
Sonic the Hedgehog (Prototype) Overview
This is a prototype build of Sonic the Hedgehog for the SEGA Genesis, discovered and preserved by the retro gaming community. It predates the final 1991 release and was developed internally by Sega's Sonic Team, led by Yuji Naka. As a prototype, it offers a fascinating glimpse into the game's evolution, with unfinished level layouts, placeholder graphics, and alternate enemy placements that differ from the retail version. This build is not an official release but a development artifact that collectors and historians value for its insight into the design process. Fans of platformers and Sonic history will find this prototype a unique piece of gaming archaeology.
How to Play Sonic the Hedgehog (Prototype) Online
Getting started: Press Enter to start the game. You control Sonic through Green Hill Zone, which looks and plays slightly differently from the final version. The core objective is the same: collect rings, avoid or defeat enemies (mostly by jumping on them), and reach the end of each act within the time limit. Do not let the timer hit zero, or you lose a life. The prototype has different level layouts, so be prepared for unexpected pits, altered enemy positions, and missing obstacles. There is no save feature - like most Genesis games of this era, you must finish in one sitting or use passwords if available (this build may not have working passwords). Experiment with the spin dash move (hold down and press the jump button) once you master the basics; it was a new technique at the time and is fully functional in this build.
