Sonic Multi is a fan-made modification for the SEGA Genesis that transforms Sonic the Hedgehog into a two-player experience. This is not an official Sega release but a ROM hack created by the homebrew community, likely appearing in the early 2000s. It runs on the original Genesis hardware or emulators and keeps the familiar 16-bit visuals and audio of the first Sonic game.
Playing Sonic Multi means controlling Sonic (or Tails, depending on the variant) through the classic zones while a second player joins in. The core mechanics remain unchanged - run fast, collect rings, and defeat enemies - but now you can race against or cooperate with a friend. The levels are identical to the original, so anyone who knows Sonic 1 will feel right at home. There are no new story elements or unique power-ups; the novelty lies entirely in the shared screen action.
This title is worth trying if you ever wished you could play the original Sonic with a buddy. How to Play Sonic Multi Online
Most of the moves from Sonic the Hedgehog apply here. Press the D-Pad to move left or right, and press the S button to spin-dash or attack badniks. The X button makes you jump. By default, Player 1 uses the keyboard; Player 2 may use a connected controller or additional keys if the emulator supports it. Check your emulator's input settings to assign a second set of controls.
When you start Sonic Multi, you will see the familiar title screen and menu. Choose your save slot or start a new game. The mod places both players on the same screen from the beginning of Green Hill Zone. You can run ahead of your friend or hang back to help each other. There are no special rules - just play through the zones as you would solo, but with another player sharing the action. If one player dies and the other collects enough rings, the dead player can be revived by touching the other. This keeps the fun going without immediate frustration.
Because this is a mod, there is no official manual. The game is entirely in English and uses the same text as the original Sonic 1. If you have ever played Sonic on Genesis, you already know how to play. The main difference is that you now have a partner to blast through Green Hill, Marble, and beyond. Experiment with both cooperative and competitive approaches to see what you enjoy more.
