Unofficial ROM hack. The notes below come from community sources and have not been verified against the patch itself, so levels, mechanics and features may differ from what is described.

Sonic Christmas 2001 is a fan-made ROM hack of the original Sonic the Hedgehog for the SEGA Genesis. Released around the holiday season, it replaces the usual stages with Christmas-themed graphics, including snow, decorations, and festive color palettes. The creator is not widely documented, but the hack circulates among retro gaming communities as a novelty seasonal variant of the classic platformer. The gameplay follows the same structure as Sonic 1: you control Sonic through side-scrolling levels, collecting rings, defeating Badnik enemies, and reaching the goalpost. The primary change is visual - rings are replaced with presents, certain stage elements are recolored, and some sprites are swapped for holiday imagery. The physics and level layouts remain largely unchanged, so anyone familiar with Green Hill Zone will feel right at home. This hack is worth trying if you want a lighthearted, nostalgic twist on a familiar game. It doesn't reinvent the wheel or offer new mechanics, but the Christmas makeover makes it a fun one-off playthrough during the holiday season. Compared to other seasonal hacks, Sonic Christmas 2001 is relatively simple but captures the festive spirit without overcomplicating the original design.

How to play Sonic Christmas 2001 online

Getting Started

When you boot up the hack, you'll see a short title screen before being dropped into the first level. The game assumes you already know how to play Sonic - there are no tutorials. Press Start to begin. The core loop is the same as Sonic the Hedgehog: run to the right, collect rings (now presents), avoid or spin-jump on enemies, and reach the goalpost before time runs out.

There are no new mechanics or hidden routes here - this is purely a reskin. Spin dash is not present (this is based on Sonic 1, which lacks the move). To jump, press X; to roll into a ball while jumping, press down + jump. You can also press down on a slope to build speed. The only real tip is to enjoy the festive visuals and don't expect any surprises. If you get stuck, standard Sonic level strategies apply.
