Sonic and Tails: Double Trouble
Inside Sonic and Tails: Double Trouble
This is a ROM hack of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 for SEGA Genesis called Sonic and Tails: Double Trouble. It was created by a fan and takes levels from the Game Gear game Sonic Triple Trouble and adapts them to the 16-bit Genesis engine. The hack was released several years after the original Sonic 2, as part of the homebrew and hacking community's ongoing love for the series.
You play as either Sonic or Tails through a series of stages that mirror the zones from Sonic Triple Trouble. Each zone is redesigned for the faster Genesis hardware, with familiar badniks, loops, and platforming challenges. The core loop is the same as a classic Sonic game: run left to right, collect rings, defeat enemies, and reach the goal. Special stages from Sonic 2 are included for collecting Chaos Emeralds, though the layout might differ.
If you are a fan of the Game Gear Sonic games or want a fresh take on the Sonic 2 engine, this hack is worth a look. It is not an official game but a passion project, so expect some rough edges in level design. It offers a nice mix of nostalgia and novelty without straying too far from what makes classic Sonic platformers enjoyable.
How to Play Sonic and Tails: Double Trouble Online
Getting Started
Start by pressing Enter to go through the title screen. You will see a menu where you can choose between Sonic, Tails, or both characters. Use the D-Pad to navigate and X to confirm. Selecting two players puts you in a two-player competitive mode. For the main experience, pick Sonic or Tails alone.
Once you start a game, you begin in the first zone. The goal is to reach the end of each act by running, jumping on enemies, and avoiding hazards. Collect rings to protect yourself from hits. If you lose all rings and get hit, you lose a life. Grab a 1-Up by collecting 100 rings or finding hidden monitors.
The hack includes special stages accessed by jumping into giant rings hidden in the levels. These stages let you collect Chaos Emeralds, which are needed for the best ending. If you are familiar with Sonic 2, the controls and physics feel very similar, though level layouts require some trial and error.
