How to play Sonic 3 & Knuckles Hack - Boss Attack online
Getting Started
When you boot the hack, you'll see a modified title screen. Press Start to reach a boss selection menu. Use the arrow keys to choose which boss to fight first - they're listed in the order they appear in the original game. Confirm with X (jump). The battle begins immediately; there's no cutscene or level transition.
The gameplay is identical to the original boss fights. You control Sonic (or any character the hack allows) and must damage the boss by hitting its weak point, usually after it attacks. Each boss has a pattern: for example, the first boss (Egg Mobile) shoots fireballs and drops bombs, while later bosses like Robotnik's mechs have multiple phases. Defeating a boss automatically moves you to the next, so you can't skip ahead without beating the previous one.
There are no lives or continues - if you lose all rings and take a hit, you restart that boss fight. Rings dropped during battle can be collected for protection, but they don't carry over between bosses. The hack keeps the original music and sound effects. If you get stuck, remember that most bosses have a tell before attacking; learning the timing is key.

Sonic 3 & Knuckles Hack - Boss Attack FAQ
What makes Sonic 3 & Knuckles Hack - Boss Attack stand out among SEGA Genesis titles of its era?
It removes all level exploration and focuses solely on boss battles, offering a pure challenge that the original game doesn't provide. This makes it a unique way to practice specific fights without replaying entire stages. As a fan hack, it also shows how modders repurposed commercial games to create new experiences on the Genesis.
In what year was Sonic 3 & Knuckles Hack - Boss Attack originally released?
The release year is not widely documented; it likely appeared online sometime after the original Sonic 3 & Knuckles was released in 1994, but no exact year has been recorded. Most sources simply list it as a vintage fan project from the post-2000s ROM hacking scene.
Is Sonic 3 & Knuckles Hack - Boss Attack exclusive to SEGA Genesis or did it appear on other systems?
It runs exclusively on the SEGA Genesis due to being a direct ROM hack of the original cartridge. No ports to other platforms exist, though it can be played on emulators or flash carts on original hardware. Being a fan-made modification, it was never officially released on any system.
