Unofficial ROM hack. The notes below come from community sources and have not been verified against the patch itself, so levels, mechanics and features may differ from what is described.

Sonic 2 Encore V1.2 is a fan-made ROM hack for the SEGA Genesis, based on the original Sonic the Hedgehog 2. It was created by members of the Sonic modding community and released online as a free patch. This version adds new content and tweaks to the classic platformer, though specific details of the changes vary between builds. The core gameplay remains true to the 1992 original. You control Sonic (and optionally Tails as a partner) through side-scrolling levels called zones. The goal is to reach the end of each act by running, jumping, and spin-dashing past enemies and obstacles. Rings act as health, and collecting 50 rings allows access to a bonus stage. The hack likely introduces modified level layouts, new enemy placements, or the ability to play as Knuckles. If you have already played Sonic 2 to death, this hack offers a fresh take on familiar stages. It is not a replacement for the original but rather a fan tribute aimed at experienced players looking for new challenges. Being a ROM hack, it requires patching the original game ROM or downloading a pre-patched version to play on emulators or flash carts.

How to play Sonic 2 Encore V1.2 online

Getting Started When you boot the game, you will see the title screen. Press Enter to go to the main menu. If the hack supports a save feature, you may be able to select an existing file or start a new game. Otherwise, choose one player or two player mode. In two player mode, one player controls Sonic and the other controls Tails simultaneously. Once a game starts, you control Sonic using the D-Pad to run left and right. Press X to jump. Hold down on the D-Pad while stationary to charge a spin dash, then release to blast forward. The objective is to reach the large sign at the end of each act. Collect rings to survive hits, and watch out for spikes and bottomless pits. Each zone has two acts followed by a boss fight. This hack may alter level layouts or add new paths, so expect surprises even if you know the original Sonic 2 well. If you get stuck, remember that rings give you a second chance after taking a hit, but if you are hit with zero rings, you lose a life. Extra lives are earned by collecting 100 rings.
