Along the way, hold right on the arrow keys to move Sonic forward, and press X (A button) to jump over obstacles and onto enemies.

The core loop is simple: run through each linear level collecting rings for protection, avoid or destroy enemies (such as Buzz Bombers and Motobugs), and hit the goal at the end. Rings also grant bonus points and a chance at a special stage if you collect 50 before the end. In special stages, you guide Sonic through a maze to collect rings and earn an emerald. The game has six zones (Green Hill, Bridge, Jungle, Marble, Scrap Brain, and Sky Base) with three acts each, plus a final boss area.

A key difference from the Genesis Sonic games is the lack of a spin dash - you cannot roll while running. Your only attack is jumping on enemies from above.
