Unofficial ROM hack. The notes below come from community sources and have not been verified against the patch itself, so levels, mechanics and features may differ from what is described.

Sonic 1 Smooth Edition is a fan-made hack of the original Sonic the Hedgehog on SEGA Genesis. It's a platformer at heart, taking the classic 1991 game and tweaking its physics and frame pacing for a smoother experience. The exact creator isn't widely documented, but the hack circulated online in retro gaming communities, likely built for emulators or flash carts. If you know the original, this is a modified version rather than an official release. What you do in Sonic 1 Smooth Edition is the same as the vanilla game - run through Green Hill Zone, Marble Zone, and the rest, collecting rings and defeating robots. The core loop hasn't been rewritten: you guide Sonic from the start of each act to the goal post, avoiding spikes, pits, and Badniks. The hack's appeal lies in how the movement and camera feel, aiming to eliminate the original's occasional slowdown or input lag. The level layouts are unchanged, so you're still chasing that perfect run against the ten-minute timer. For someone curious about classic Genesis platformers, Sonic 1 Smooth Edition is a minor but interesting tweak to a well-known title. It doesn't add new content or levels, so its value is limited to players who want to experience the original with slightly polished handling. Niche even by hack standards, it's best approached as a curiosity for die-hard Sonic fans rather than a essential play. If you just want the definitive original, you're better off with the official release or Sonic Origins.

How to play Sonic 1 Smooth Edition online

Getting Started: When you boot up Sonic 1 Smooth Edition, you'll see the title screen. Press Enter to start the game. You'll be thrown into Green Hill Zone Act 1. Hold the right Arrow Key to run forward and press X to jump. Grab rings to protect yourself from enemies - each hit costs you rings and a brief invincibility. If you get hit with zero rings, you lose a life. The goal is to reach the giant signpost at the end of each act. Your core objective is to complete all three acts of each zone, then face Dr. Robotnik in a boss fight. The hack's smoothness means you may notice less slowdown when many objects are on screen. Take advantage of loops and slopes to build speed. Collecting 50 rings in an act lets you access a special stage through a giant ring, where you earn continues. The game ends when you run out of lives, but you can continue from the start of the current act. There are no saves - this is a classic run from beginning to end in one sitting. If you're used to the original, expect slightly different physics for acceleration and deceleration. The hack doesn't alter the level design, so your knowledge of the original maps will translate directly.
