Sonic 1 - Master Edition IV - Final Phase on Genesis
This is a fan-made hack of the original Sonic the Hedgehog for the Sega Genesis, titled Sonic 1 - Master Edition IV - Final Phase. It's a modified version of the classic platformer, created by an unknown individual or team. As a rom hack, it builds on the 1991 original but is not an official Sega release. The exact year of creation is not widely documented, but it surfaced on retro gaming archives as a community project.
How to Play Sonic 1 - Master Edition IV - Final Phase Online
Getting Started
As with the original Sonic the Hedgehog, your goal is to guide Sonic through each level from left to right, reaching the goal sign at the end while collecting rings and defeating enemies. The core gameplay remains the same: press the A button (X key mapped) to jump, hold it to roll into a spin attack. Use the D-pad to move and spin dash by holding down and pressing the jump button.
This hack introduces new level designs, altered enemy placements, and possible tweaks to physics or difficulty. The basic loop still involves navigating loops, ramps, and obstacles while maintaining a steady momentum. Rings act as health; lose all rings and you die if hit again. Checkpoints are marked by star posts, and you have three lives per attempt.
If you are familiar with the original Sonic 1, expect familiar zones but with remixed layouts. There is no instruction manual for this hack, so trial and error is part of the experience. The menus and title screen are in English, so navigation is straightforward.
