Sonic 1 - Galaxy Edition

Sonic 1 - Galaxy Edition is a ROM hack of the original Sonic the Hedgehog for the SEGA Genesis. It was created by an unknown author and is not an official release, but rather a fan-modified version of the classic 1991 platformer. The hack replaces the original level designs with new stages themed around space and cosmic environments, though the core gameplay remains faithful to the source game. This is a one-player experience built on the same engine as Sonic 1, running on original Genesis hardware or emulators. Like the base game, Sonic 1 - Galaxy Edition is a side-scrolling platformer where the player controls Sonic the Hedgehog as he runs through stages at high speed, collects gold rings, and defeats enemies like motobugs and buzzbombers. The goal is to reach the end of each act while avoiding spikes, bottomless pits, and environmental hazards. Many of the classic mechanics are present: spin jumping, rolling into a ball, and using bumpers or springs to reach higher areas. The hack apparently introduces altered level geometry, new platform placements, and a starry backdrop, but does not change the fundamental loop of running, jumping, and blasting through checkpoints to reach the goal. For fans of the original Sonic the Hedgehog, this hack offers a fresh take on familiar stages without changing the physics that made the game great. It's a niche addition to the vast library of Genesis fan creations, best suited for players who have already mastered the stock game and want to explore a new layout. The hack doesn't rewrite the rulebook or add new moves, so it feels like a slightly different version of Sonic 1 rather than a brand new title. If you enjoy retro platformers and are curious how hobbyists reinterpret classic games, this is worth a casual playthrough.
