Unofficial ROM hack. The notes below come from community sources and have not been verified against the patch itself, so levels, mechanics and features may differ from what is described.

Sonic 1 Character Pack is a ROM hack for the original SEGA Genesis Sonic the Hedgehog. It replaces Sonic with other characters from the series, such as Tails or Knuckles, letting you play through the classic Green Hill Zone and beyond with different abilities. This is a fan-made modification, not an official Sega release, and its exact origin isn't widely documented. The core gameplay remains the same as Sonic 1: you run through side-scrolling levels, collect rings, defeat badniks, and reach the goal. The main difference comes from swapping Sonic for another character. For example, if the hack lets you play as Tails, you might be able to fly briefly. As Knuckles, you could glide and climb walls. The level layouts are unchanged, so it's essentially the same game with a new moveset. It's worth checking out if you've beaten Sonic 1 dozens of times and want a fresh twist. The hack doesn't add new levels or story, but it changes how you approach familiar obstacles. It's a simple, niche modification that's fun for five minutes of nostalgia. Don't expect a full overhaul - it's more of a curiosity for dedicated Sonic fans.

How to play Sonic 1 Character Pak online

First, load the ROM in your browser emulator. The title screen will look like Sonic 1 but might mention the character swap. Press Enter to start. You control the character through Green Hill Zone, Marble Zone, and the rest. The jump and spin dash work as usual, but if you have different character abilities (like Tails' flight), experiment with the D-Pad and B button.

The core loop is straightforward: run right, avoid spikes, collect rings, and defeat enemies by jumping on them. Grab a shield or speed shoes if you see them. Reach the large ring at the end of each act to proceed. Special Stages are accessed by collecting 50 rings and jumping into the giant ring at the end of a zone. Use the character's unique moves to discover shortcuts or reach higher ground that Sonic couldn't.

If this is your first time with a Sonic hack, remember that the basic physics are identical to the original. The only changes are cosmetic and character ability based. No new level gimmicks are added. Treat it as a novelty run through a beloved classic with a different moveset.
