Sonic 1 but different sprites
Sonic 1 but different sprites: Genesis Platformer
If you've played through the original Sonic the Hedgehog on SEGA Genesis more times than you can count and the classic pixel art has become a little too familiar, this mod is a fun way to shake things up. It's called Sonic 1 but different sprites, a fan-made hack that replaces the character sprites, enemy designs, and some background elements with new artwork. There's no official release date or known creator attached to this mod; it's a community project made to be played on emulators or original hardware with a flash cart. It stays firmly within the platformer genre, just like the 1991 classic it's built on.
At its core, this is still the same Green Hill Zone and Scrap Brain Zone you remember. You guide Sonic through loop-de-loops, collecting gold rings and smashing robotnik's badniks. The physics and level layouts remain untouched, so every jump, spin dash, and platforming section plays exactly as it did in the original. The only difference is the visual presentation: Sonic might sport a different palette or design, the rings could be replaced with something else, and the enemies might take on a new look. The core loop is identical - reach the end of each act, beat the boss, and move on to the next zone.
This mod is worth checking out if you want a low-stakes way to revisit a beloved classic without the gameplay feeling stale. It doesn't add new levels or mechanics, so it's not for someone looking for a major overhaul. Think of it as a visual remix you can play through in an afternoon. It keeps the tight controls and level design that made Sonic 1 a landmark game, but gives your eyes something different to look at. If you enjoy seeing how the community reimagines old favorites, this is a tidy example of a sprite swap done right.
How to Play Sonic 1 but different sprites Online
Getting Started
Fire up the game and you'll see the familiar SEGA logo followed by the title screen, now with the new sprites on display. Press Enter to start and you'll be dropped into the first zone, Green Hill. Since this is a mod of the original Sonic 1, there are no menu changes or language barriers - it's all in English and plays exactly like the retail version.
Your goal in each act is to make it to the giant ring at the end while collecting as many rings as possible. Rings act as health; if you get hit while carrying at least one, you'll just lose your rings instead of dying. Hold down the S button to build up a spin dash, then release to blast forward. You can also jump on enemies (X button) or roll into them from a spin dash to destroy them.
The game is straightforward: run right, avoid spikes and pits, defeat the boss at the end of each zone, and repeat through six zones. There are no continues or saves in the original game, so try to beat each level in one sitting. If you lose all your lives, you'll have to start from the very beginning. The mod doesn't change any of that, so the same tips apply: learn enemy patterns, memorize level layouts, and keep moving to build speed.
