Soleil: Genesis Adventure

Soleil, known elsewhere as Crusader of Centy, is a top-down action-adventure game for the Sega Genesis that arrived in Europe during the mid-1990s. It wears its Legend of Zelda influence openly, but with a twist: instead of battling mindless monsters, many enemies here are displayed with a sympathetic bent. The exact developer and publisher for this European release aren't widely documented, but the game earned a cult following for its thoughtful approach to conflict.

You control a young boy who sets out to save the world, but your journey quickly becomes about more than just swinging a sword. Early on you befriend animals - a dog, a kangaroo, even a penguin - and each one lends you a unique ability when summoned. Exploring dungeons involves fighting foes, pushing blocks, and solving puzzles, all while managing your health and magic. What sets Soleil apart is that you can often talk to enemies or spare them, shifting the usual monster-slaying dynamic into something more diplomatic.

If you enjoy Zelda clones with personality, Soleil is worth revisiting. Its animal companion system and the way it treats adversaries as more than target practice give it a distinct feel among Genesis action-adventure titles. It's not the longest or most polished game on the system, but its charm and unique concept make it a hidden gem for fans of the era.

How to play Soleil online

Start your game at the hero's house in the village. Talk to townsfolk to learn about the quest, then head east to the woods to retrieve your sword. The core loop involves exploring overworld areas and dungeons, fighting enemies, and collecting items. Use the B button (S) to attack with your sword, and the A button (X) to jump or confirm menu selections. When you acquire animal companions, press the Y button (Z) to summon them and use their special abilities - for example, the dog can dig up hidden items, and the kangaroo can help you jump farther.

Pay attention to enemy dialogue. Not every foe needs to be defeated; some can be talked out of fighting or even befriended. This can affect the story and unlock different paths. Saving progress is done via passwords (check the manual or online resources for the format). If you get stuck, experiment with using different animals in each area - puzzles often require a specific companion's skill.

The game has full English text in this European version, so you can read all story and menu text without language barriers.
