How to play Shougi no Hoshi online
Getting Started
Upon booting Shougi no Hoshi, the player sees a Japanese title screen. Press Start to reach the main menu, which offers options like player vs. computer and player vs. player. The text is entirely in Japanese, so knowing a few kanji for "start" (スタート) and "select" (セレクト) helps. Use the D-pad to highlight an option and press the A button to confirm.
The core loop is playing a full game of shogi. The board is displayed with all pieces in their starting positions. Turn order begins with black (sente) moving first. Select a piece by moving the cursor over it and pressing A; then move the cursor to a valid square and press A again to place it. The computer opponent will respond with its own move after a short pause. The game continues until one side checkmates the other or a draw is agreed upon.
New players should be familiar with standard shogi rules, including piece promotions and drops. The game does not include tutorials or rule explanations in English. If you are new to shogi, consider studying basic strategy before jumping in. The AI provides a reasonable challenge for intermediate players, but the lack of difficulty settings means very strong opponents may find it too easy.
