Shining Force II (USA)
Inside Shining Force II (USA)
Shining Force II is a tactical RPG released for the SEGA Genesis. It came out in North America in 1994, following the Japanese original. Sega published it, with development handled by Sonic! Software Planning. The game is a direct sequel to the original Shining Force and sticks with the same genre: turn-based strategy with RPG elements.
You take on the role of Bowie, a young hero from the Kingdom of Granseal. After a thief accidentally frees the demon lord Zeon, your task is to gather allies and fight back. The gameplay alternates between exploring towns and overworld areas, then diving into grid-based battle maps. During battles you move characters one by one, using attacks, spells, and items. Positioning and terrain matter. Outside battle you recruit new characters, buy equipment, and visit churches to save or revive fallen soldiers.
For fans of 16-bit strategy games, Shining Force II holds up remarkably well. It offers a larger cast and more complex maps than its predecessor, though the core loop remains the same satisfying mix of story and tactical combat. The sprite work and music are typical high quality Sega fare. If you enjoy Fire Emblem or Final Fantasy Tactics, this is a classic that defined the genre on Genesis.
How to Play Shining Force II (USA) Online
First, the game begins with a brief introduction showing the thief entering the Shining Path. You then take control of Bowie in the town of Granseal. Explore the town, talk to NPCs, and visit the castle. The king will send you on your first mission. Battles are triggered by walking to certain locations on the world map or entering enemy strongholds.
During battle, you command your units on a grid. Each turn you can move a unit within its movement range, then perform an action like attack, cast a spell, or use an item. The turn order is determined by agility and unit speed. You win by defeating all enemies or the boss. Outside of battle, level up your characters and equip better gear purchased from shops. Characters can be promoted after reaching level 20 at a special temple or item, which boosts stats and opens new classes.
A key part of Shining Force II is the egress spell, which lets you exit any battle and return to the world map. This is useful if you are overwhelmed or want to grind for experience. Also, always keep a healer in your party, like Sarah the priest. Saving at churches is essential, as battles can be tough.
