Unofficial ROM hack. The notes below come from community sources and have not been verified against the patch itself, so levels, mechanics and features may differ from what is described.

SHC2020 The Real Sonic 2 is a ROM hack of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 for the SEGA Genesis, created as an entry in the 2020 Sonic Hacking Contest. This fan-made modification reworks the classic platformer, though exact details of the changes are not widely documented. It was built for the Genesis/Mega Drive and is best understood as a community project rather than an official release. Playing this hack sticks close to the original Sonic 2 formula: you control Sonic (and optionally Tails) as you run through side-scrolling levels, collecting rings, defeating robot enemies, and avoiding obstacles. The core mechanics of spin jumping, rolling, and the spin dash return, but the levels, enemy placements, and possibly even physics or objectives may have been altered. Without access to the specific changelog, new players should expect a familiar Sonic experience with unexpected twists. For fans of retro Sonic games, SHC2020 The Real Sonic 2 offers a fresh take on a beloved title from the 16-bit era. It's a niche piece of the Sonic modding scene, worth trying if you enjoy seeing how community creators reinterpret classic levels. Keep in mind it's a simple hack with no new story or characters, so approach it as a curated level set rather than a full sequel.

How to play SHC2020 The Real Sonic 2 online

Get ready to run. This is a ROM hack of Sonic the Hedgehog 2, so you'll start at the first act of Green Hill Zone. Press Start to begin, then hold right on the D-Pad to move forward. The core loop is the same as the original: reach the end of each stage within the ten-minute time limit while collecting as many rings as you can. Rings protect you from one hit, and if you finish a level with at least 50 rings, you can access a special stage. Your main actions are jumping (X) and the spin dash (hold S while crouching, then release). Use jumps to defeat enemies and bounce off springboards. Lives and continues depend on the modification; if in doubt, treat it like standard Sonic 2: losing all lives sends you back to the start of the zone. The game has no save feature, so play through in one sitting or use the emulator's savestate option. Since this is a fan hack, don't expect any tutorial or manual. Menus are in English (since the base game was localized). If you run into altered level designs, take your time exploring - some secrets may be moved or removed. Stick to the same controls you'd use for any Genesis Sonic game.
