Sally Acorn in Sonic the Hedgehog
What is Sally Acorn in Sonic the Hedgehog?
This is a ROM hack for the SEGA Genesis called Sally Acorn in Sonic the Hedgehog, which replaces Sonic with his friend Sally Acorn from the Archie Comics and Saturday morning cartoon. It was released as a fan-made modification, not an official Sega title, so there's no exact release year or retail publisher. The hack was created by a single fan known as Fusion, and you'll need the original Sonic the Hedgehog ROM to run it on an emulator or flash cart.
As Sally Acorn, you still run through the same Green Hill Zone, Marble Zone, and other classic stages as Sonic normally would. The core gameplay remains a fast-paced 2D platformer: you jump on enemies, collect rings, and reach the end of each act. The main difference is the sprite swap - Sally has her own running animation and character design, but her abilities mirror Sonic's exactly. There are no new stages or story additions; the hack focuses purely on the visual substitution.
For fans of the Sonic franchise, this hack offers a neat novelty: playing as a beloved supporting character in the original game. It's not a full overhaul or difficulty mod, just a cosmetic swap that holds nostalgia for those who grew up with the comic or cartoon. If you're looking for fresh gameplay, you might find it too simple, but as a piece of fan history it's worth a quick run to see Sally in pixel form.
How to Play Sally Acorn in Sonic the Hedgehog Online
Getting started is straightforward since this is a cosmetic hack of Sonic the Hedgehog. Load the ROM in your emulator, press Enter to start, and you'll see the Sega logo before the title screen. Press Start again to proceed to the level select or character select - since only Sally is available, just pick a zone and go.
Your goal in each act is to reach the goalpost before time runs out, while collecting rings and defeating badniks. Sally can spin jump and roll by pressing X (jump) and then S (roll), just like Sonic. Rings protect you from a single hit; lose them all and you die. There are no new mechanics, so if you've played Sonic before, you already know how this works.
If you want to see all the sprites, try playing through all three acts of each zone. The hack doesn't change any level layouts or secrets, so any Sonic 1 guide will still apply. No special Japanese menus to worry about - everything is in English as in the original game.
