Ristar (USA, Europe) (September 1994)
Ristar (USA, Europe) (September 1994) Overview
Ristar is a platformer developed and published by Sega for the Genesis, originally released in 1994 in North America and Europe. You control a tiny, star-shaped character who uses his stretchy arms to grab enemies and objects, then hurl himself into them. The game was created by the same team behind Sonic the Hedgehog, but it offers a more methodical, grapple-based style of play that feels quite different from Sonic's speed.
Gameplay revolves around grabbing ledges, enemies, and special switches with Ristar's arms. Pressing the attack button while holding onto something sends Ristar flying headfirst into it, dealing damage or activating objects. You can also use the environment to swing across gaps or climb walls. Each level is divided into several zones with a boss at the end, and you collect stars and other items for points and health.
What makes Ristar stand out today is its unique control scheme, which requires precise timing and aiming rather than pure speed. The graphics are colorful and detailed, with a distinct visual style that holds up well. If you enjoy games that reward careful exploration and creative movement, Ristar is a hidden gem worth revisiting. It's not as famous as Sonic or Mario, but its grapple mechanics are memorable and unlike most Genesis platformers.
How to Play Ristar (USA, Europe) (September 1994) Online
Getting Started
Press Start to begin a new game. You'll see a world map with several planets to choose from; pick the first one to start. The core loop is simple: move Ristar from left to right, using his arms to grab onto enemies and objects. When you see a target with a glowing hand icon, press the attack button (S) while holding the direction toward it to latch on, then press attack again to fly into it. This is how you defeat most enemies and break blocks.
Pay attention to the environment. Many platforms are out of reach unless you grab a nearby enemy or a grapple point to swing yourself up. You can also grab and climb certain walls by holding the D-Pad toward them. Collecting stars adds to your score, and grabbing a giant floating star refills your health. Boss fights require you to wait for an opening, then latch onto a weak point and attack.
If you get stuck, remember that you can jump while holding a grapple, and you can also use the B button to run faster on the ground. The game is fairly linear but rewards exploration for hidden bonus items. Take your time learning the grapple timing - it's the key to mastering Ristar.
