Revenge of Shinobi, The (USA, Europe)
Revenge of Shinobi, The (USA, Europe) - Action Classic
The Revenge of Shinobi landed on the Sega Genesis in 1989, developed and published by Sega. It's a side-scrolling action game that quickly became a system staple. Yuzo Koshiro, famous for the Streets of Rage soundtracks, composed the music, giving each stage a distinct pulse. This release covers both the USA and Europe regions, so it's the version most Western players experienced.
You control a shinobi moving through horizontally scrolling levels. The core loop involves running, jumping between platforms, and fighting enemies with shurikens for ranged attacks and a katana for close combat. A magic meter lets you unleash special attacks that clear the screen or boost your damage. Each stage ends with a boss fight that requires learning attack patterns. The game demands precise platforming and quick reflexes, especially as enemies get tougher.
What holds up today is the variety in stage themes and that killer soundtrack. Koshiro's music shifts atmosphere from temple ruins to city rooftops. The controls feel responsive even by modern standards, and the difficulty curve keeps you engaged without feeling cheap. For Genesis owners, this is considered the peak of the Shinobi series on 16-bit hardware.
How to Play Revenge of Shinobi, The (USA, Europe) Online
When you boot up the game, the title screen appears. Press Enter to start. You'll see a menu where you can choose New Game or select a stage (if you've already beaten it). Use arrow keys to navigate and X to confirm.
You take control of Joe Musashi, a ninja on a mission. The objective is to move to the right, defeating all enemies you encounter. Use S to attack with your sword and throw shurikens by pressing S while holding the direction you want to aim. Jump over pits and obstacles with X. Collect power-ups dropped by enemies to restore health or refill your magic gauge. Magic attacks are triggered by pressing A (X button) - they consume magic and can clear the screen of enemies.
Each level ends with a boss. Learn their attack patterns, dodge, and strike when they're vulnerable. Continues are limited, so careful play is rewarded. If you get stuck, try using magic defensively or memorizing enemy spawn points. The game is harder than the average Genesis action title, but practice makes it manageable.
