Pallete Change (S2 Hack)
Pallete Change (S2 Hack) on Genesis
Pallete Change is a ROM hack of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 for the Sega Genesis, originally released by an unknown creator. As the title suggests, this hack alters the color palette of Sonic and sometimes the environment, but does not introduce new levels, story elements, or gameplay changes. It was likely made as a simple palette swap for personal enjoyment or to share within the hacking community, and it appears to have been distributed primarily through retro gaming archives rather than any official channel.
How to Play Pallete Change (S2 Hack) Online
Getting Started
Pallete Change plays identically to Sonic the Hedgehog 2. You control Sonic (and sometimes Tails) as you run through side-scrolling zones, collecting rings, defeating enemies by jumping on them, and avoiding obstacles. The objective is to reach the end of each act while maintaining momentum and collecting as many rings as possible to survive hits.
The core loop is straightforward: run to the right, jump over pits and spikes, use loops and slopes for speed, and take down Dr. Robotnik at the end of each zone. The palette swap may make certain elements harder to see against backgrounds, so keep an eye out for rings and enemies. There is no save feature, so you will need to complete the game in one sitting or use the level select code (up, down, left, right, up, down, left, right, up, down, left, right, up, down, left, right on the title screen) to jump around.
