OutRun on SEGA Genesis is the home console port of Sega's legendary 1986 arcade driving game. Designed by Yu Suzuki, this version was released in North America and Europe in 1991, bringing the open-road experience to the 16-bit generation. Unlike most racing games of the era, OutRun was always described by its creator as a driving game first, focused on the sheer pleasure of cruising rather than competitive lap times.
The player takes the wheel of a red Ferrari Testarossa-inspired convertible, driving along a scenic highway split into multiple stages. At certain forks in the road, you choose which route to take, influencing the scenery and difficulty. Your goal is simply to reach the end of each leg before the timer runs out while dodging civilian traffic. The game uses a behind-car perspective and a distinct sense of speed, with three gear selections that change the handling and top speed.

Getting Started
When you press Start, you'll see the title screen. Press Enter to begin. The first thing you do is choose a starting course by selecting one of two route branches at the first fork. Each route leads to a different set of stages, so you can experiment with different paths to see all the scenery. Your car is always in first gear by default; you can shift up (A button) or down (E button) to match your driving style.
The core loop is straightforward: drive forward, avoid oncoming traffic and slower cars, and reach the end of the stage before the timer hits zero. Colliding with other cars slows you down and costs precious time. You have a limited number of continues, so careful driving is rewarded. There is no pit stop or repair system - you simply restart the stage if you crash too much or run out of time.
New players should start on the easier left branches (the A choices) until they get comfortable with the handling and gear shifting. Using a higher gear gives more speed but less maneuverability, so drop down a gear for tight turns. Keep an eye on the timer, and remember that each stage is short. The game is about memorizing the road layout and traffic patterns to make smooth runs.
