Ooze, The

The Ooze is a SEGA Genesis action game that came out in the late 1990s, originally published by Sega. The premise is straightforward: Dr. Caine, a scientist, has been turned into a living puddle of ooze and now seeks revenge on the colleagues who wronged him while searching for a way to become human again. It's a side-scrolling title that plays like a mix of platformer and beat 'em up, with a unique visual style that uses a lot of dark, moody backgrounds and a small but detailed sprite for the ooze itself. You control the ooze directly as it slithers, jumps, and attacks through a series of levels. The main mechanic involves shooting blobs of goo at enemies or splitting your body to hit multiple targets at once. You also have to manage your ooze's mass; absorbing certain items restores health while taking damage shrinks you. The goal in each stage is to reach the exit while defeating enemies and avoiding hazards. The game is entirely single-player and fairly linear, with a password system to save progress. The Ooze stands out for its unusual protagonist and the fact that it was published late in the Genesis's life, making it something of a hidden gem. It's not as polished as some of the console's bigger hits, but its weird concept and competent action make it worth a look if you enjoy experimental titles from the 16-bit era.
